This week, the federal government rolled out new work requirement rules for SNAP recipients.
To receive full benefits, adults between the ages of 18 and 64 need to work or take part in an approved job training program. Those who do not meet the requirements will be limited to receiving SNAP benefits for just three months in any three year period.
Nicole Hunt, director of Public Policy and Advocacy at the Food Bank for New York City, told NY1 anchor Shannan Ferry during an interview on “News All Day” that the new requirements will put more strain on food banks and food pantries that are already seeing increased demand because of inflation.
“We are going to see people who previously had additional assistance from SNAP no longer having access to that,” Hunt said, “not because their circumstances have changed but because literally the rules have changed underneath them.”
