LAKE PLACID, N.Y. (WCAX) – Olympic facilities in the North Country are going to be funded for $100 million under the recently passed New York state budget, supporting maintenance as well as drawing new events.
It comes after Gov. Kathy Hochul said she wants to be the one leading the exploratory committee on bringing the Winter Olympic Games back to New York.
It’s unclear who else would be on that committee, but Darcy Norfolk Rowe with the Olympic Regional Development Authority says their track record shows they can host international events.
“The first step is really an exploratory committee, and there will be no bids until this process unfolds, and that has yet to be announced, but is in discussion. And then once that exploratory committee reports back, then a full review will take place to understand whether we move forward with a bid,” Norfolk Rowe said.
The earliest New York could host a dual-city Winter Olympics would be 2042.
