New York Democrats have introduced a long awaited constitutional amendment to change the redistricting process this week. They say it is in response to the effort led by President Donald Trump to encourage Republican legislatures to take up mid-decade redistricting ahead of the 2026 midterms. Because a constitutional amendment must pass two consecutive legislatures before being put to the voters — there won’t be an impact in New York until 2028 if ultimately approved. Also, the recently passed New York state budget includes a slate of auto insurance reforms championed by Gov. Kathy Hochul. According to Tom Stebbins, executive director of the Lawsuit Reform Alliance of New York State, ratepayers may see a drop in their car insurance costs of between $200 and $300 annually.
