“Too many New Yorkers spend too much time waiting on buses stuck in traffic, said Mamdani. “The 34th Street busway will change that, turning one of our most congested bus corridors into one that actually moves.”
Once implemented, the busway will be in effect between 6 a.m. and 10 p.m. every day.
In addition to buses, trucks and emergency vehicles will be able to use the entire corridor from Third Avenue to Ninth Avenue.
Cars will have access to 34th Street, but drivers will be required to turn at the next intersection.
Plans to build the busway were paused in Oct. 2025 by the Federal Highway Administration, citing concerns for routes truckers could take in that part of the city.
Studies conducted by the New York City Department of Transportation found that rerouted traffic could be handled on surrounding streets without significantly raising travel times.
Construction of the busway is expected to be completed by the end of the fall.
PIX11 reached out to the FHA for comment on the restart of the 34th Street busway, but has not heard back.
