State Sen. Zellnor Myrie has passed a resolution to recognize “Sneaker Day” in honor of the Knicks’ NBA Finals Game 1 win.

As New Yorkers celebrated a dramatic comeback victory by the New York Knicks in Game One of the NBA Finals, State Sen. Zellnor Myrie used the moment to honor another cornerstone of the city’s culture: sneakers.
On Thursday, the State Senator adopted a resolution sponsored by Myrie, who represents Central Brooklyn, officially organizing “Sneaker Day” in New York State. The annual observance highlights the role sneakers have played in shaping fashion, culture and commerce across the state, especially in New York City.
The resolution’s passage coincided with a thrilling Knicks victory at the Frost Bank Center in San Antonio last night, where the team erased a 14-point third-quarter deficit before closing the game on an 11-0 run to take a 1-0 lead in the NBA Finals.
“Our beloved Knicks never quit, and neither do New Yorkers,” said Senator Myrie shortly after the Knicks closed out on an 11-0 run. “Fancy or bargain, brand-new or old-school, brand-name or private label, sneakers bring us together and so does tonight’s win. I’m proud to once again recognize Sneaker Day with this resolution, which honors the contributions of sneakers to our state’s culture, economy and history. And I couldn’t be prouder to enter this historic win into the record.”
Historically, Myrie has been a lifelong “sneakerhead,” and has sponsored other bills recognizing other sneaker days across the state.

Brooklyn is home to hundreds of sneaker shops, including Laced Up Brooklyn, Jordan Heads Brooklyn and KCDC Skateshop, making the resolution a fit for the borough.
A companion resolution in the State Assemble is sponsored by Assembly Member Chantel Jackson of the Bronx.
With the Knicks now holding a 1-0 series lead, New Yorkers will have another reason to celebrate when Game Two tips off Friday night at 8:30 p.m.
