A Bronx woman who struck and killed a Woodside teenager while she was driving a private sanitation truck on the night of March 29, was arrested on Wednesday, June 3.

A Bronx woman was arrested on the morning of Wednesday, June 3, and booked at the 111th Precinct in Bayside in connection with a fatal collision that killed a young Woodside woman on the night of Sunday, March 29.
Mayra Cruz, 39, of Gates Place in Norwood, was driving a Royal Waste Services private sanitation truck on Roosevelt Avenue just before midnight and was turning northbound onto 62nd Street from the eastbound lane of Roosevelt Avenue when she stuck a 19-year-old woman who was crossing 62nd Street in the northern crosswalk.

Police from the 108th Precinct in Long Island City responded to a 911 call of a pedestrian struck at the intersection and found the victim unconscious and unresponsive under the right side of the garbage truck. EMS pronounced her dead at the scene. She was later identified as Nishath Jannath, of 55nd Street.

Cruz remained on the scene and was treated by EMS for minor injuries. She was arrested on Wednesday more than nine weeks later pursuant to an ongoing investigation by the NYPD Highway District’s Collision Investigation Squad.
Cruz was charged with failure to yield to a pedestrian resulting in injury and failure to use due care resulting in serious injury. She was issued a desk appearance ticket returnable on June 23.

Jannath was heading home from her receptionist job in Parsons Boulevard parking garage in Jamaica when she stopped to pick up a birthday cake for her little sister. She was fatally struck about a half mile from home in a rutted crosswalk. Woodside’s Bangladeshi community rallied with members from Community Board 2 at the intersection on May 15 calling on the city to improve safety conditions along Roosevelt Avenue.
