STATEN ISLAND, NY – The Holy Trinity-St. Nicholas community Philoptochos Society of Staten Island held their annual farewell dinner on June 4 at Andrew’s Diner. The event honored Pete Christofilakes and Christina Charitis for their many years of contributing to the Philoptochos and its efforts.

Philoptochos President Dee Sidiropoulos presented the honorary plaques, noting that, “this award is not just a formal recognition, but a small token of gratitude towards two volunteers who made giving a way of life.”

“The work of the Philoptochos could not exist without such people,” she said. “A big thank you to all the members and friends who quietly and selflessly support our work.”

“It was a busy year full of social service and missionary work with a common goal, the support of those in need,” Sidiropoulos said. “The Philoptochos of Staten Island is made up of capable and worthy ladies, who know well what it means to help people in need.”

“From September until today, we have organized many different events, such as the ‘Men who Cook’ with all the proceeds being given to food for the poor, we had the sale of sweets and tsoureki for the St. Basil Academy, followed by the charity walk,” she continued. “We donated $6,000 to the Global Medical Relief Fund, an organization that provides hope and assistance to children who are missing or have lost the use of their limbs.”

“We also had our annual Mother’s Day dinner with the proceeds covering the needs of our association,” Sidiropoulos said. “The efforts resulted in a highly successful year and we are very happy about it. I wish everyone a good, restful summer and that in September we will all meet again and continue our work.”

The community’s presiding priest Fr. Vasileios Apostolidis congratulated the Philoptochos for the great work it is doing, the Christian principles and the love it shows towards its fellow human beings and the community.

“Charity is an integral part of the pastoral activity of the Orthodox Church,” he noted. “I wish God to grant enlightenment and health to everyone.”
