New York Democrats are jumping into the national redistricting fight.
Ahead of the end of the legislative session in Albany this week, the state Senate and Assembly gave preliminary approval to a constitutional amendment that would allow mid-decade redistricting in New York in 2028.
To become law, it would need to be approved by the legislature again next year and then passed by voters as part of a referendum.
Jeffrey Wice, a redistricting expert and professor at New York Law School, joined NY1 anchor Shannan Ferry on “News All Day” to discuss how the New York amendment factors into the national redistricting battle.
“There’s a lot riding on what might happen in New York next year,” Wice said. “I think voters are going to see this in front of them now for the next 18 months.”
