BROOKLYN, Mich. (News 10) – The FireKeepers Casino 400 race is days away, but festivities have already started at Michigan International Speedway.
NASCAR returned to Brooklyn with a full schedule of races and entertainment.
John Chambers, a Canada resident, said this is his 30th time attending in a row.
“I missed two years because of COVID, but I would’ve been here,” Chambers said.
It’s a common theme at the Michigan International Speedway. Show up just one time and fans say they’re hooked.
Chambers makes the drive from Canada. He said his fandom started because of his dad.
“When I was young I went to Flamboro Speedway and followed all those guys. And my dad brought me up to do this. So, I bring about 18 guys here, I look after it all: the campsites, the tickets, everything,” Chambers said.
The fan zone, just outside the track, gives all of Chambers’ 18 guests something to do. He said the best memory he has came from a day when many fans wouldn’t think about racing.
“We were here one day and we had a tornado, and my dad was here. We went through the tornado and that was the most exciting time because we never missed a race and the weather was terrible,” Chambers said.
The fan zone has different types of vendors, food options, drink options and NASCAR fan experiences.
Chris Tobias from Mount Morris said being a fan of NASCAR runs in the family.
“My grandmother, me and her watched it together until she passed away. I light her candle every Sunday and we watch it together,” Tobias said.
He said since his grandmother’s passing, he thinks about how much she would’ve loved to be here.
“She was an Erik Jones fan through and through, and I feel like she’s with me when we’re watching it, she’s watching it with me,” Tobias said.
Races and concerts started at the speedway, with more activities scheduled through the weekend leading up to the headline race. The FireKeepers Casino 400 is Sunday at 3 p.m.
