This month, Democrats across New York State will decide who will be our party’s choice for New York State comptroller. I’m running for reelection based on my record as a solid, lifelong progressive, my work protecting the pensions of more than a million public workers and retirees, and my work to address climate change, fight Donald Trump, and get New Yorkers the best value for their tax dollar. My opponents are multi-millionaires you never heard of before, Raj Goyle and Drew Warshaw.

Both of them claim to be running as progressives, but outside their campaign rhetoric, their personal track records are anything but. In reality, one is a Kansas conservative, the other is a corporate Democrat and political hack.

So let’s look at some facts. Goyle served in the Kansas state legislature, where he voted with MAGA Republicans 80% of the time. He earned an A rating and endorsement from the NRA, he wanted to militarize the southern border, voted to eliminate the corporate income tax, and he voted for anti-choice “fetal personhood” legislation.

Warshaw has never held any elected office. He spent time as an Albany insider until that administration collapsed under scandal and divisiveness. Warshaw is a developer who lives in a multimillion dollar condo, rakes in real estate cash for his campaign, and wants to send pension dollars to the same real estate company that paid him millions.

For me, I have a different track record.

I inherited an office mired in scandal. I cleaned it up. In my time in office I’ve doubled the size of the pension fund, taken on big corporations to curb excessive CEO pay, and stood up to bullies like Elon Musk and Trump.

I’ve returned record levels of unclaimed funds, invested billions in affordable housing, invested in clean energy and put the pension fund on track to be carbon neutral by 2040. I’ve used our shareholder power to fight for women’s rights, LGBTQ rights, and workers’ rights. I’ve audited and reported on nearly every state agency, local government, and policy initiative that exists.

My office’s investigations into corruption have led to hundreds of arrests and millions of dollars returned to the taxpayers. I hold the government accountable, and I’m pretty damn good at it. Not everyone agrees with every decision I make, and that’s how democracy works, but I don’t lie about my views.

Want to know where I stand on an issue? My record is an open book. Literally. I created Open Book New York to create a new level of transparency about how your tax dollars are being spent.

I’m proud of my work. My parents both were union members. They taught me the value of hard work and the importance of keeping your word and never tarnishing our last name. That’s been my guiding light in office, not ego, but doing right by families like my own across New York, and I have the record to back it up.

Goyle and Warshaw want you to confuse their record and rhetoric with progressiveness. But when you scratch the surface you learn the reality, both are multimillionaires who are out of step with New York values and can’t be trusted with our votes or our money. Both would jeopardize the retirements of more than a million working families across New York.

So on Primary Day, June 23, vote for me and honest, competent, progressive values. Reject these two politicians who think they can fool you with false promises and family fortunes.

DiNapoli is the comptroller of New York State.
