Shelters in New York City and across the country are experiencing an influx of cats and newborn kittens. It typically happens during the warmer months.
The ASPCA has something it hopes will help: It just opened what is considered the city’s first and largest high-volume kitten nursery.

The nursery will provide care for hundreds of young kittens under eight weeks old every year who are too young to survive on their own

The nursery will provide care for hundreds of young kittens under eight weeks old every year who are too young to survive on their own.
The majority of kittens are transferred from Animal Care Centers of NYC to help free up their capacity. Other kittens also come to the nursery from individual rescuers throughout the city.
The next step is to get the kittens into foster homes, and eventually, a permanent home.
“We could not do the work that we do without our fosters. They are incredible,” said Delia Kurland, vice president of adoption center and feline programs at the ASPCA. “In the shelter, kittens are more likely to get sick, right? They are around more animals and other sick animals. They don’t get as much human interaction as they do in a home, and so we really don’t like to keep them here any longer than we have to.”
The new kitten nursery is located in the same building as the ASPCA Adoption Center on East 92nd Street in Manhattan, along with other ASPCA programs.
