Democrats in New York’s 17th Congressional District will determine who faces incumbent Republican Rep. Mike Lawler.
Putnam County Democratic Committee Chair Jen Colamonico says it’s an impoartant race.
“It really could determine the outcome of who controls the House of Representatives,” she said.
The race for the 17th District will be one of closest watched during the midterms, and not just for New Yorkers.
“it’s important not only for our district, but really for our country in terms of regaining the majority in the House, and what that means is providing a check and balance on President Trump,” Colamonico said.
The Democrats vying for the party nomination are: John Cappello, an Air Force veteran who grew up in Rockland County; Cait Conley, a West Point graduate who served in Special Operations; Beth Davidson, a Rockland County legislator; Effie Phillips-Staley, a Tarrytown village trustee; and Mike Sacks, a lawyer-turned-television reporter.
Colamonico’s committee recently endorsed Conley.
“I always say the 17th is like three different districts,” Colamonico said. “Rockland is its own thing. Westchester has its dynamics. And then the Putnam/Dutchess, maybe Northern Westchester, is a very different district.”
That regional diversity makes this a tough race to predict.
New York’s primary elections will be held June 23. Early voting runs from June 13 to June 21.
