WATERTOWN — A popular Public Square lunch spot is permanently closing its doors Wednesday.
Todd V. Tarzia, owner of Vito’s Gourmet in the Paddock Arcade, said Monday that he is retiring. He informed his staff of the impending closure last week.
The restaurant opened in 2012 and quickly became a place for downtown workers, or for those just passing through, to get lunch, best known for its sandwiches, wraps and soups.
Tarzia said he has no specific plans for his retirement, although he plans to spend winters outside the north country.
“I’ll catch up on stuff that you can’t catch up on when you have a business,” he said.
After 14 years in business, with a sign now on the door announcing the business’s closure, he’s hoping the final days will not be unexpectedly busy.
“We’re looking for a soft landing, not a crazy last couple of days,” he said.
