Two Alabama high school students will represent the state at a national musical theater competition in New York City for the first time.
The Broadway Theatre League of Huntsville announced Linda Mathis from Lee High School and Lucas McMinemon from Hartselle High School earned spots at the National High School Musical Theatre Awards, also known as the Jimmy Awards. The students advanced after performing in school musicals and competing through The Tallulah Awards, hosted by the league.
The Tallulah Awards wrapped up their first year after three years of planning. The competition included 11 schools, 13 productions and more than 700 students, organizers said.
The Jimmy Awards celebrate excellence in high school musical theater and bring together top student performers from across the country. Students spend 10 days training, coaching and performing with Broadway professionals.
“This is an extraordinary moment not only for these students, but for arts education across Alabama,” said Kip Driver, director of communications for the Broadway Theatre League of Huntsville.
The students will take part in workshops, rehearsals, individual coaching and networking opportunities before the nationally livestreamed showcase. The Jimmy Awards are set for June 22 at the Minskoff Theatre in New York City.
