Detectives in the Bronx are still on the hunt for the teenage suspect who opened fire on a bus Tuesday afternoon, killing a commuter who had asked him to lower his voice during a bus ride.
According to police sources, the incident unfolded aboard a Bx36 bus as it passed East Tremont Avenue and White Plains Road around 2:33 p.m. on June 8.
Officers from the 43rd Precinct received a 911 call reporting an assault. Upon arrival, officers found 41-year-old Jonathan Pettigrew aboard the bus with a gunshot wound to the abdomen.
Pettigrew was rushed to Jacobi Hospital, where he could not be saved and was pronounced dead.
Sources familiar with the investigation report that the deadly shooting erupted after Pettigrew confronted his would-be killer, who had been chatting loudly on a cellphone, and asked him to keep his voice down.
The request quickly escalated into a verbal dispute that ultimately ended with the suspect opening fire on Pettigrew. After shooting the victim, cops said, the teenager fled the bus and was last seen heading southbound on White Plains Road while wearing a white t-shirt.
No arrests have been made, and the investigation remains ongoing
