STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — At 8 a.m. on Sunday, Nov. 2, over 50,000 runners hit the streets of the five boroughs as part of the 2025 TCS New York City Marathon.

The 26.2-mile event kicked off, as always, on Staten Island, where runners departed Fort Wadsworth and crossed the Verrazzano-Narrows Bridge toward Brooklyn.

MTA Bridges and Tunnels closed both directions of the bridge’s upper level around 11 p.m on Saturday evening, Nov. 1, to allow for pre-race roadway preparation.

To accommodate the waves of runners during the marathon’s start, the lower level of the Verrazzano Bridge was closed to all non-emergency vehicular traffic starting at 7 a.m. Sunday.

According to the MTA, the bridge is expected to reopen in full sometime around 4 p.m.

Additionally, the Bay Street and Lily Pond Avenue exits of the Staten Island Expressway were closed around 3 a.m. on Saturday, and they are also expected to reopen at approximately 4 p.m. Sunday.

Major roads along the marathon route will remain closed throughout Sunday afternoon, including Richmond Terrace, between Jersey Street and Bay Street, and several other roads near the Verrazzano.

Other streets on Staten Island may have been closed on Sunday, at the discretion of the NYPD.
