The countdown to the FIFA World Cup is nearly over, with the tournament set to begin this week and the New York-New Jersey region preparing to host matches and events.
The opening match will take place in Mexico City, with Mexico facing South Africa. Just days later, MetLife Stadium will host its first World Cup match when Brazil takes on Morocco.
Local officials and organizers are ramping up preparations as fans from around the world begin arriving in the region.
Earlier this week, Host Committee CEO Alex Lasry joined Mayor Zohran Mamdani and Gov. Kathy Hochul to announce a series of events, including a free World Cup watch party in Central Park.
Lasry says the tournament presents a unique opportunity for New York and New Jersey to showcase themselves on a global stage, with billions expected to follow the competition worldwide.
He joined “Mornings On 1” to discuss what fans can expect as the World Cup arrives.
