MANHATTAN, Kan. (WIBW) – The Flint Hills Discovery Center achieved a major milestone Wednesday when the 1 millionth visitor passed through its doors.
Since opening in April 2012, the Flint Hills Discovery Center has served as a destination for residents and visitors alike seeking to learn more about the natural, historic, and cultural significance of the Flint Hills, according to a news release.
Through its exhibits, programs, and special events, the Discovery Center has grown over the past 14 years into a premiere attraction and educational destination.

“Getting to one million guests took a lot of hard work, energy, and dedication from everyone involved,” said Stephen Bridenstine, Flint Hills Discovery Center director. “This milestone is a testament to the vision behind the Flint Hills Discovery Center and the many people who have supported it over the years.”
The one millionth guest was recognized at the Discovery Center during a special reception commemorating the occasion.
The Cash family from Dwight, Kansas, was surprised with a “One Millionth Guest” certificate and complimentary annual family membership.
Frequent visitors to the Flint Hills Discover Center, the Cash family enjoys the Carl and Mary Ice Prairie Playscape, traveling exhibits and the 4D immersive film “Tallgrass Prairie: Tides of Time,” according to the news release.
“We are thrilled to celebrate this exciting moment with our guests,” said Mary Hildreth, Guest Services and Membership manager. “Every visitor who walks through our doors becomes part of the Flint Hills Discovery Center story. Reaching one million visitors reflects the enthusiasm and support of our members, guests, and community, and we are grateful to be part of so many memorable experiences.”
This achievement highlights the Discovery Center’s continued impact as an educational institution and economic driver for the community and the region, the news release said.
The Discovery Center creates a $3 million annual economic impact through daily visits, rentals, and education programs with two-thirds of visitors coming from outside Manhattan.
This includes 3,000 school-age youth who visit annually on organized field trips from throughout the state.
The Flint Hills Discovery Center features immersive exhibits, educational programming, special events and opportunities for visitors to explore the story of the largest remaining tallgrass prairie ecosystem in North America.
As it celebrates this milestone, the center remains focused on inspiring appreciation and understanding of the Flint Hills for future generations.
