Searing heat and humidity arrives in NYC with the risk of severe storms

NEW YORK (PIX11) — The dangerous heat arrives in New York City on Thursday, and it will also come with the chance of severe thunderstorms.

A heat advisory will be in effect for most of the tri-state region between the midday hours of Thursday and Friday evening, according to the National Weather Service. The heat index is expected to reach 100 degrees, which can result in heat-related illnesses.

An air quality alert has also been issued for Thursday by the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation. High levels of ozone are expected, and strenuous outdoor activities should be limited.

The hot temperatures and high humidity will bring the threat of thunderstorms that could be severe, especially on Thursday and Friday.

A few scattered showers, along with a gusty thunderstorm, will be possible on Wednesday evening. After the shower threat diminishes, it will be a warm and humid night. Overnight lows will be in the lower 70s.

The heat and humidity will be in full force on Thursday and Friday. Temperatures for both days will end up in the mid 90s, and high levels of humidity will make it feel like around 100 degrees or so.

Severe thunderstorms may flare up for both days during the afternoon and evening. The main threat will be damaging winds and flooding downpours.

It will stay hot over the weekend with highs around 90 degrees, but the key difference is that the humidity will be much lower.

A cold front could bring the threat of storms late on Sunday, then bring in more seasonable temperatures by early next week.

Monday will feature a mix of sun and clouds, with highs in the lower 80s.
