Assemblymember Ron Kim honored seven-year-old Parker Melia on the floor of the State Assembly for her precocious accomplishments as a young Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu champion. He welcomed her and her family, including her parents Mitchell and Justin and her brother Jackson, to the chamber and spoke warmly before his colleagues about her victories and competitive achievements.
In addition to recognizing her already extensive accolades, Assemblyman Kim and his colleagues also wished Parker the best of luck when she travels to Brazil next week to compete in the Brazilian national jiu-jitsu championship. The Assemblymember himself has also been competing in jiu-jitsu tournaments as a Blue Belt, and recently won a silver medal at the Miami International Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Federation Open.
Assemblymember Ron Kim, Chair of the Tourism, Parks, Arts and Sports Development Committee, said: “Parker represents the future of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, one of the fastest growing combat sports in the world that teaches young people self-discipline, focus, and grit. She also represents thousands of young girls, including my daughter, who has taken up jiu-jitsu to delink from a digitalized world and learn how to stay present and purposeful.”
