As the Red Sox’ offseason officially got underway Sunday, manager Alex Cora’s focus wasn’t on baseball.
Cora ran the New York City Marathon in 4:37:51 and was greeted with Neil Diamond’s “Sweet Caroline” as he crossed the finish line, according to video captured at the event. His partner, Angelica Feliciano, also ran. It is believed to be Cora’s first-ever marathon. He spent most mornings during the regular season training for the event, increasing his mileage throughout the year.
Cora, who played 14 seasons in the majors from 1998 to 2011 and just completed his seventh season managing the Red Sox, ran the Boston Half Marathon last November and the organization’s Run to Home Base in August. Daily runs have been part of his routine since the offseason between the 2023 and 2024 seasons when he lost significant weight.
“I’m in a better place,” he said in January 2024. “Obviously, last year was a grind for me, not only on the field but personally, in a sense. I think I let the season take a hit on me… I’ve been telling the family, ‘We’re in a good place right now.’ Just working out, eating healthy, enjoying the life. That’s the most important thing.”
