OGDENSBURG – A dozen high school seniors helped senior citizens learn more about technology at Ogdensburg Public Library recently.
Seniors in the Digital Media Design class at Northwest Tech BOCES shared their skills to help seniors in the community master their technology devices.
The new program, “Seniors for Seniors Tech Help” aims to assist older adults with their computer, iPad, and cell phone questions. They can also help with setting up email and social media accounts, and sharing photo editing techniques.
“This is a new community service our class is providing. It helps to meet our work-based learning requirements for the class,” said Molly Ladouceur, teacher at Northwest Tech BOCES.
“We are hoping to do one Friday each month at the Ogdensburg library,” she said.
“The idea for this new program came from my partner teacher, Susan Stewart, at Southwest Tech BOCES, who is also planning to do this in Gouveureur,” said Ladouceur.
Students assisted Shirley Miller, of Ogdensburg, with her iPad she brought to the library. Students helped her learn how to free up memory on her iPad and manage the many photos stored on it.
While I was there taking photos for this story, students also answered many of my questions about my cell phone. They showed how to move the hundreds of photos on my phone to my computer and then store them on a memory stick. They also taught me how to save battery power by switching to low power mode.
The class also does poster and layout design for area organizations. They designed signage for the Ogdensburg library. Their posters can be seen around the library.
Students in the Digital Media Design class also design advertisements, create business logos, take photographs and do videography and animation.
