Minutes after the Knicks clinched the NBA championship, Mayor Zohran Mamdani announced that New York City will host a ticker-tape parade and City Hall ceremony on Thursday to honor the team’s first championship in more than five decades.
The ticker-tape parade will be the first in Knicks history, even though the team won championships in 1970 and 1973.
“For more than 50 years, New Yorkers have waited for this moment. Through near misses, heartbreak and a hope that every year could be our year, this city never stopped believing in the Knicks. And this team fulfilled that hope with grit, resilience and heart — just like the five boroughs itself,” Mamdani said in a statement. “Now it’s time for our city to celebrate together. Bing bong.”
Mamdani said City Hall and municipal buildings across the city will be lit in blue and orange — the Knicks’ colors — on Thursday to celebrate the victory. The team will also be presented with keys to the city at the ceremony.
More details about the ticker-tape parade and City Hall ceremony will be released Sunday, the mayor’s office said.
