Brooklyn Park, the city Melissa and Mark Hortman called home, is remembering the couple on the one-year anniversary of their passing.
On a road near the Hortmans’ house, neighbors have placed several signs in memory of the couple.
Cindy Christen put up a sign in front of her home a year ago after the shooting.

“I think it’s important to remember her forever,” Christen said. “Remembering the good and not the horrible thing. Not the act that happened, but the good that she brought to the community and to the state.”

Christen’s daughter lives across the street from the Hortmans and met Melissa several times.

“She had a wonderful garden, and she was so open and friendly,” Hortman said. “Whenever Sara and I would walk over there, she was so open, and she loved talking about her plants and her garden.”
Sunday night, Christen and a group of neighbors remembered Melissa. They held a margarita party, Melissa’s favorite drink, and lit a candle in her honor.
