Plans for a redesigned Penn Station moved a step closer to reality earlier this month, as Amtrak, federal officials and Penn Transformation Partners unveiled detailed renderings of the proposed project.
The design aims to transform the nation’s busiest rail hub with larger concourses, expanded passenger space, a new train hall entrance on Eighth Avenue and improvements intended to increase functionality and capacity.
Project leaders say the goal is to create a brighter, more efficient station that better serves the hundreds of thousands of travelers who pass through each day.
While construction is not expected to begin until late next year, the newly released plans offer the clearest look yet at the vision for Penn Station’s future.
Former New York City Transit President and current Amtrak special adviser Andy Byford joined “Mornings On 1,” along with the architect behind the design, Vishaan Chakrabarti, to discuss the proposal, the challenges ahead and what the transformation could mean for rail travel in New York City.
