The Staten Island Ferry is a free passenger ferry operated by the NYC Department of Transportation. Roughly 25.2 million annual passengers travel on the ferry during its 24/7 operation.

Operation started in 1817 when the Richmond Turnpike Co. started offering a steamboat service between Manhattan and Staten Island. The New York City government eventually took it over in 1905.

In this photo, the Manhattan skyline can be seen in the distance as the ferry heads back to Staten Island on a cold and windy December evening.
