WASHINGTON (TNND) — A suspect in New Jersey on Monday allegedly struck a U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agent with a vehicle and fled during an apprehension attempt, according to police.

The Stafford Township Police Department posted on Facebook that they received a report at 9:30 a.m. of the incident, which occurred on Route 72 in Manahawkin, N.J.

“Information was provided that I.C.E. was attempting to apprehend a suspect when the suspect fled from the scene in a vehicle, striking the I.C.E. Agent,” the department wrote. “The agent discharged his firearm at the vehicle, reportedly striking it. The suspect fled the scene in the vehicle and has not been located at this time. The agent reportedly sustained unknown injuries and it is unknown if the suspect was injured at this time. There is no reason to believe there is any concern for the public’s safety.

“Stafford Township Police adheres to the Attorney General’s Immigrant Trust Directive and was not assisting or a part of the I.C.E. operation. The ongoing investigation is not being conducted by Stafford Township Police. Our role at this point is to manage traffic and secure the crime scene,” the department continued.

New Jersey law does not allow law enforcement officers at the local, county, and state levels to assist in ICE operations.

Manahawkin is about 85 miles from Delaney Hall, an illegal immigrant detention center in Newark, N.J., The Hill reported.

ICE and the Department of Homeland Security didn’t immediately respond to The Hill’s requests for comment.

Anti-ICE protesters have gathered outside Delaney Hall amid an ongoing hunger strike by detainees to protest facility conditions.

New Jersey Gov. Mikie Sherrill (D) said last week that federal officials gave her a “closely controlled and limited tour” of Delaney Hall, during which she was not allowed to speak directly to detainees.

Earlier this month, the New Jersey attorney general’s office filed a lawsuit against Delaney Hall operator GEO Group on behalf of the state Department of Health in Superior Court in Essex County, asking a judge to grant “immediate entry” to the facility for a full health inspection.
