The U.S. Supreme Court declined to take up a challenge to New York state’s law allowing lawsuits to be filed against gun makers, wholesalers and dealers.
It’s a law that allowed the families of the victims in the 2022 Buffalo mass shooting at a Tops supermarket to sue the companies that sold gun parts to Payton Gendron before the shooting.
The case was brought to the Supreme Court by the National Shooting Sports Foundation.
Gov. Kathy Hochul released a statement after the decision, calling it a “massive victory” in the fight against gun violence.
“The gun lobby fought tooth and nail against this first-in-the-nation law, which gives New Yorkers the ability to sue gun manufacturers when their weapons are used in deadly shootings. Our gun safety laws are some of the toughest in the nation and have proven successful in protecting New Yorkers from the scourge of gun violence,” she said in the statement.
