Wilka’s Sports Bar, a beloved New York city establishment catering to women and queer people, says that Meta banned the business’s Instagram page without warning on June 15, just halfway into Pride Month.

“As an update, Instagram has permanently banned our social media account for ‘violating community guidelines,'” the business posted to an alternate account. “We are a woman/queer-owned bar that fosters an inclusive environment for all women’s sports fans and members of the LGBTQIA+ community. We have no idea why Instagram banned our account or what specifically about our account was flagged and deemed inappropriate in the first place, other than what sadly seems to be the obvious these days.”

Attempts to navigate to the bar’s main page — @wilkasnyc — return a “Profile Isn’t Available” error message as of this writing.

Established in the fall of 2025, Wilk’s Sports Bar is queer-owned and the city’s first dedicated women’s sports bar, per its website. A packed summer event calendar boasts of sapphic-centered parties, trivia nights, and even a WNBA 30th anniversary celebration, all geared towards centering queer sports fans — a far cry from the usual atmosphere of sports bars, which have largely been dominated by a men’s sports crowd.

The permanent ban comes four days after the bar says their official page was initially suspended on June 11 for “violating community standards.” According to Wilka’s, the bar had been receiving “a lot of flak recently for only playing women’s sports and unfortunately that has led to our main page getting suspended by Instagram.” After submitting an appeal, Wilka’s Sports Bar posted that Meta permanently banned the bar’s official page. Them has reached out to Meta for comment and will update when we hear back.

“We worked hard to build a following of nearly 12k people and are working even harder to bring you lots of fun and inclusive events this Pride month,” the Instagram post reads. “Please help us spread the word about Wilka’s and this amazing community of women’s sports enthusiasts that we foster!! And come out and support Wilka’s – we have lots of great events coming up and we’d love to see you there!!!”

Fans of the recently opened bar sounded off in the comments in outrage over the decision.

“I hope these people were also giving one-star reviews, negatively reporting, and loudly advocating for the inclusion of women’s sports during all of history as men’s sports bars openly ignored, mocked, and proclaimed they’d NEVER play women’s games,” one commenter wrote. “Somehow I doubt it.”
