DYKER HEIGHTS — THE CHRISTA MCAULIFFE SCHOOL received a $3 million check from City Councilmember Susan Zhuang, a Democrat serving several southwestern Brooklyn neighborhoods.
Last week, Zhuang presented the second of two checks to the school, also known as I.S. 187, to modernize its facilities. The $3 million brings the amount of secured funds to $4.5 million for the school, named in memory of one of two women astronauts who died along with five others in the 1986 Space Shuttle Challenger explosion.
The investment is part of Zhuang’s broader push to upgrade public schools across District 43. Working in partnership with Brooklyn Borough President Antonio Reynoso and Council Speaker Julie Menin, Zhuang obtained this city budget funding for new labs, upgraded auditoriums and modern technology in schools throughout southern Brooklyn to help underwrite science lab and auditorium upgrades, new technology, STEM labs, a hydroponic lab, playground and bathroom renovations, and camera system upgrades.
Last year, Zhuang secured funding for Brooklyn Technical High School in Fort Greene, many of whose students live in her district. One of the nation’s largest STEM-specialized public secondary schools, Brooklyn Tech received $5 million last December for a new multimedia and research center.
