GREENPOINT — A TEMPORARY MURAL along McGuinness Boulevard at Father Studzinski Square in Greenpoint has been completed, transforming a long stretch of asphalt and concrete bike barrier into engaging and accessible artwork, New York City Department of Transportation Commissioner Mike Flynn announced Tuesday. Artist Kevin Cincotta’s design, conceived with community input, highlights both Greenpoint’s history as a marshland and its Polish heritage.
The art is part of the redesign of McGuinness Boulevard, pledged by Mayor Zohran Mamdani in January, to deliver parking-protected bike lanes along the corridor from Meeker Avenue to the Pulaski Bridge. The redesign will make the street safer for pedestrians, cyclists and drivers, DOT said. Work began in late May, the Brooklyn Eagle reported.
The redesign project had become a thorn in the side of former Mayor Eric Adams, whose administration had abruptly halted work following pushback from area business leaders — leading to bribery charges for mayoral aide Ingrid Lewis-Martin, who was accused of accepting television roles, catering services and money in exchange for shutting the redesign down.
