Seemingly everyone has gotten a little shine off the New York Knicks winning the NBA Finals Saturday. Okay, not West Wilson or Elmo, but everyone else. Billboard made note of New York-themed songs that got a big streaming bump on the night of the championship game. Unsurprisingly, Jay-Z and Alicia Keys’s “Empire State of Mind” led the raw data, with 1.4 million streams that night. However, it had the smallest increase in streams thanks to the Knicks win, with only a 32 percent increase in listens. Seeing a much bigger comparative bost were songs like Sinatra’s version of “Theme From New York, New York” (62 percent increase), Ja Rule, Fat Joe, and Jadakiss’s “New York” (a 68 percent bump), and Billy Joel’s “New York State of Mind” (up 71 percent).
But what about Taylor Swift? On the night she and the Haim sisters got the Cricut out to support their team, how much did “Welcome to New York” increase in streams — both OG and Taylor’s Version? With the exception of Ms. Keys, the girlies were absent from Billboard’s blog. Addison Rae’s “New York” saw an increase in streams, anecdotally, among the IG stories of Knicks fans living in Los Angeles. Was there a quantifiable boost as well? Sinatra’s “New York, New York” did numbers, but what about Liza Minelli’s? Cat Power’s? Further study is required.
