A shelter-in-place advisory has been lifted in the village of Bergen after a hazardous materials leak in the area of 15 Church Street, according to Genesee County officials.
A sheriff’s department lieutenant says up to 30,000 gallons of ammonia leaked on Wednesday.
“The good part about ammonia, it’s stored as a liquid but as soon as it’s given to the atmospheric pressure it will become a gas. It’s heavier than air so it will stay low level, but it should dissipate quickly with the wind we’ve had today,” said Deputy Chief Garrett Dean, Bergen Fire Department.
Bergen firefighters say no injuries or illnesses have been reported.
The Genesee County Hazmat Team and Mercy Medic 1 also responded to the scene.
