Periods of moderate to heavy rain are expected through the morning commute, with some communities experiencing brief downpours. Localized ponding will be possible.Strong to Severe Storms in the Afternoon The Storm Prediction Center has placed Vermont and much of Northern New York under a Level 2 out of 5 risk for severe weather on Thursday. The greatest chance for strong to severe thunderstorms will be between 12 P.M. and 5 P.M.The primary threat will be damaging wind gusts. Some storms could produce wind gusts up to 60 mph, which may be strong enough to bring down tree limbs and cause isolated power outages.Even outside of thunderstorms, it will be a windy day. Southerly winds will likely gust 40–50 mph+, especially for west-facing slopes.The good news is that this will be a fast-moving system. Showers and thunderstorms will move out Thursday evening, with quieter conditions expected overnight.Could storms rotate?There will be plenty of wind shear in the atmosphere Thursday, meaning winds become stronger and change direction with height. A few storms could briefly rotate and produce a quick spin-up tornado, but damaging straight-line winds are the main concern.
