Jason Cornet started making his own beats on GarageBand at 7 years old, using an old MacBook his father brought home from work. As he prepares to release his debut album at 26, under the name Tenroc, production, intriguing sonics and catchy melodies are still at the core of his work.

Tenroc’s first record, “God Is A Person,” is slated for release July 17. The lyrics on each track are rooted in the artist’s Christian faith, with sounds inspired by ’80s rock and pop with urban influences.

“You might not be a religious person, but I believe that coupled with the sonics, people can take something from the music either way,” Cornet said. He said he was influenced by a wide range of artists on the record, from Bruce Springsteen to Stevie Wonder to Charlie Puth.

Cornet’s musical roots run deep — born and raised in Ridgewood, he said his father was a DJ, and his mother a singer. He was singing and playing instruments — piano, drums and guitar — at a young age.

He started writing his own music as a teen, inspired by the work of Jon Bellion, with whom he now collaborates.

“He was doing the same thing that I would do, which is making a beat … but when he did that, he also started to write on it after he was finished,” Cornet said. “And so that kind of did something to me. I was like, maybe I should try doing that.”

Cornet said his creative process is still heavy on production — he typically starts projects with just chords or drums, and builds up the sound little by little with additions such as bass, synths and guitar. He then sings “gibberish” to find the right melody, and the lyrics often come last.

Cornet already has plenty of accolades in the music world as a producer. He earned two Grammy nominations for his work on Jon Batiste’s 2023 record “World Music Radio,” and he has collaborated with stars from Rihanna to the Jonas Brothers.

“It’s fun for me to try to fit what I do into the ways that they work,” he said. Cornet self-produced his own album, saying he had fun controlling the vision himself.

Among the songs on his forthcoming album is “mourning 2 dancing,” which came out earlier this year. It features Jon Keith and three-time Grammy winning singer-songwriter Tori Kelly.

Cornet said he is always making new music, but at the forefront of his mind right now is becoming a father in about a month.

Tenroc’s “God Is A Person” will be available on major streaming platforms including Spotify, Apple Music and Amazon Music on July 17.
