Knicks fans from Connecticut and across New England gathered at New Haven Union Station early Thursday morning to catch trains into New York City for the team’s victory parade.
Fans should leave early, with additional Metro-North service and extra stops added along the New Haven Line to accommodate the large crowds expected to travel into Manhattan for the celebration, transit officials said.
Many fans said they were excited to be part of the celebration after following the team through a memorable season.
Fans attending the parade should also be aware of security restrictions. Organizers said bags and backpacks, strollers, chairs, umbrellas, and glass or metal water bottles are not permitted along the parade route. Plastic water bottles are allowed.
“I have been a Knicks fan since I was born,” said Demario Williams of Hamden.
John Morytko of Sturbridge, Massachusetts, described the season as one of the best experiences he has had as a sports fan.
“It’s been so special, especially to be able to watch with my kids,” Morytko said. “To know they are potentially growing up in an era where the Knicks are winning in a good team, it’s super exciting. This season has meant the world.”
Morytko and his son were among the fans making the trip into New York City for the parade.
Sam Farrell of West Hartford said he got permission to attend at the last minute and was eager to make the trip.
“I could barely sleep,” Farrell said. “I was up at 3:30 [a.m.], drove out here, and I’m feeling good.”
For longtime fans, attending the parade was a chance to celebrate after years of supporting the team.
“I went through all the heartaches, those ’90s years were heartbreaking,” said Adrian Shepherd of Hamden. “When they won this year, nothing was going to stop me from going to the parade.”
Thousands of fans are expected to attend the parade in Manhattan, where security checkpoints and screening areas were set up along the route.
