PRESQUE ISLE, Maine (WAGM) – Gray skies and the threat of rain did not keep people away from one of Central Aroostook’s sweetest traditions.
The Central Aroostook Chamber of Commerce’s annual Strawberry Shortcake Sale had a line of customers before the group opened at 9 a.m. Dozens of volunteers, local business representatives, pageant queens and Chamber board members worked to keep up with the demand, assembling and delivering thousands of desserts throughout the day.

“We’ve had a continuous line starting before 9 o’clock, and probably it is. Everybody wants to beat that rain, and we’re here to keep going until the downpour, if there is one,” said LaNiece Sirois, executive director of the Central Aroostook Chamber of Commerce.
Organizers said they had roughly 1,700 pre-orders and planned for more than 3,000 shortcakes. The annual fundraiser typically sells around that mark each year, generating funds that help the Chamber support local businesses, events and community programs across Central Aroostook.
