NORTHWESTERN BROOKLYN — NEW DISTRICT WORKING GROUPS are being launched in five school districts around the city, with two of them in Brooklyn, according to New York City Public Schools Chancellor Kamar Samuels.
Samuels on Wednesday announced the first cohort of Working Groups during a fireside chatwith best-selling author and economist Heather McGhee. Their goal is formulating customized proposals to strengthen the city’s school system, ensuring academically rigorous, safe and integrated schools and making sure that all students have access to a school where they can thrive. The Working Groups will also examine diversity of students’ abilities, their socioeconomic status and language.
Two of the first five participating districts are in Brownstone Brooklyn, including Brooklyn Heights, Downtown, Fort Greene and Clinton Hill, in addition to District 16, which includes Bedford-Stuyvesant. Composed of teachers, principals, parent leaders and community organizations, the working groups will have autonomy and will also convene regularly with district superintendents and central leadership as they develop solutions to a variety of challenges. Samuels aims to implement working groups in every district by 2028.
