Two men are dead following a shooting outside a Bronx urgent care clinic, police said Friday.
The two victims, one 53, the other 43, were on Westchester Ave. near Harrod Ave. in Soundview at about 10:10 p.m. Thursday when shots were fired. Each victim was hit multiple times, cops said.
More than one shooter opened fire, according to police sources.
EMS rushed both men to Jacobi Hospital, but doctors were unable to save them. Their names were not immediately disclosed.
The two were natives of Jamaica and knew each other from the neighborhood.
The older victim, a home healthcare aide who lived nearby, was playing Dominoes with friends a short time before the shooting and had just brought his granddaughter back to the house before the shooting occurred, according to his distraught wife.
“They take away my family! They take away my family!” the 53-year-old woman said Friday morning, breaking down in tears at the spot where her husband was murdered. “I have no family! I bring him to this country!”
The victim and his wife had been together for about 30 years and had been married for 13. The two have two adult children together, his wife said.
She and her daughter were inside their home, which is a short walk from the crime scene, when there was a knock at the door.
“It was the cops,” she recalled. “They took me to the precinct and my daughter went to the hospital, where they pronounced him dead.”
When detectives informed her that her husband had died, she collapsed on the ground, she remembered.
“I dropped down like twice,” she said. “They asked if I wanted to go to the doctor, but I didn’t want to go.”
“I’ve been here since 5 a.m. this morning, walking around,” the heartbroken woman said.
Cops called to the scene found the victims dying from gunshot wounds about the body down the block from each other, according to News 12 Bronx.
Police believe the shooting occurred outside the MedCare Urgent Care, a walk-in clinic that had closed for the night hours earlier. The shooting also occurred under the MTA’s elevated No. 6 line.
Detectives working the scene had placed evidence markers at different spots on the corner as well as around a parked white car, although it wasn’t immediately clear if the car was involved in the shooting.
The gunmen ran off. No arrests were made.
Detectives were scouring the area looking for surveillance footage that can help them identify the shooter.
The shooting comes as the Bronx sees a 10% drop in murders and a 3% drop in shootings for the year. As of Sunday, detectives had investigated 41 homicides in the borough, five less than the same time last year. There had also been 108 shootings in the Bronx as of Sunday, four less than last year, cops said.
The Bronx is still responsible for more than a third of the murders and shootings in the city, according to NYPD statistics.
