Over the past week, we’ve been covering a lawsuit brought by disability rights advocates against the state’s new Medical Aid in Dying Law.
The law is scheduled to go into effect on Aug. 5, but the lawsuit is an attempt to stop implementation because, it argues, the law discriminates against individuals with disabilities.
On Monday, we heard from one of the plaintiffs in the suit, the Independent Living Center of the Hudson Valley. Tonight, we hear the other side of the issue from David Hoffman, assistant professor of bioethics at Columbia University, who argues that hypothetical future abuses of MAID shouldn’t outweigh the needs of terminal patients who are suffering now.
