New York State Public schools are testing something new in some schools that will help with police and emergency response time in case of an active shooter.

There are going to be panic buttons at public schools that, if there were a situation to arise, a school official could hit the panic button and that would immediately alert the police by calling 911.

It is a pilot program that’s going to start in New York City and see how it goes. The idea is that New York City schools, some of them, will be connected directly to 911 dispatchers in case of an emergency. What does this mean? It is a pilot program directly related to active shooter situations and is aimed at speeding up emergency responses if such a situation were to occur.

What it is is a new system, and there’s a panic button for schools, and when someone hits the panic button, it will initiate a police call right away to 911. It is said that when someone hits the panic button, it will call the police in 10 seconds or under by overriding the 911 call flow. In New York City, they are not launching it until they properly notify all parents who are going to be involved, and then see how it goes. ABC7NY.com:

The new system includes a panic button for schools that can initiate a police response in under 10 seconds by overriding the 911 call flow. The system created by the NYC Office of Technology and Innovation debuted at the Spring Creek Community School in East New York. The program won’t be active for another few weeks until all parents are notified.
