It came as no surprise when the Solomon administration announced a hike in municipal taxes this week. The mayor had predicted as much when, in February, he announced a “fiscal crisis,” brought about through years of mismanagement by the administration of former Mayor Steven Fulop. That too was no surprise. We railed against Fulop’s multifaceted malfeasance for years. What was a surprise was the amount of the tax increase, 20%, and the numerous unanswered questions. When asking residents to fork over thousands of additional dollars each year, elected officials owe voters explanations.
