Over tapas on Beacon Hill Monday night, a German software entrepreneur announced that Boston will be the new U.S. base for his company, n8n.
While the company was building a foothold in New York, CEO and founder Jan Oberhauser said the company ultimately decided Boston had better “talent density.” So he’s opening an office in Downtown Crossing and shutting down a small outpost in New York.
“The skill sets we’re hiring for sit across engineering, solutions architecture and customer-facing technical roles,” Oberhauser said. “Boston jumped out as one of the best places in the U.S. to find individuals who could fill these roles and have a huge impact on the company.”
N8n enables companies to easily create AI “agents” to automate business activities. Headquartered in Berlin, the company has 300 employees. Roughly 20% of those work in the U.S., Oberhauser said.
“We’re planning on doubling our headcount in the U.S. by the end of the year,” Oberhauser said. “A good proportion of these employees will likely be hired in Boston — but as a remote-first company, we are lucky to be in the position to be able to find, hire and integrate the best talent from across the U.S. into our team.”
The company will also use the new Boston office to connect with prospective — and current — customers around the Northeast.
Last October, n8n raised $180 million in a funding round from investors including NVIDIA, Sequoia and Accel that set the company’s value at $2.5 billion. The company was founded in 2019.
Oberhauser said he has been to Boston before, but never in the thick of a World Cup tournament.
“I am hoping that, as well as catching up with a couple of friends, I’ll be able to experience it, even if that’s just watching it in a local bar,” he said.
Earlier this year, the Stockholm-based AI coding startup Lovable opened its first U.S. office in Downtown Boston.
