Modell’s, the iconic sporting goods store founded in NYC that went out of business in 2020, is making a comeback. Sort of.
Former CEO Mitchell Modell announced on Monday a return to retail for his namesake store, at least on a small scale.
He said he was moved by the high demand for affordable Knicks gear and all the social callouts to bring back the beloved retailer in the aftermath of the Knicks’ historic NBA championship win.
While brick-and-mortar stores are part of the long-term plan, according to the New York Post, Modell is focusing on the online realm right now. He acknowledges that online stores are partly what put him out of business.
“The very technology that destroyed us will help bring us back. We’re launching T-shirts,” he told reporters.
Modell is selling a T-shirt under a new name and a new website, mitchellmodells.com. There is no affiliation with Modell’s.com or Modell’s Sporting Goods, it notes. Learn more here.
