The Mesa County Coroner’s Office has identified the person shot and killed by the Grand Junction Police Department on Friday night as 31-year-old Patti Wilson.

Although several callers reported a male suspect with a knife during the incident, the Mesa County Sheriff’s Office said the subsequent investigation revealed Wilson preferred to be referred to as “she.”

The Coroner’s Office said Wilson died as a result of two gunshot wounds sustained during the incident.

Officer-involved shooting incidents in Mesa County are investigated by the 21st Judicial District Critical Incident Response Team (CIRT).

Because GJPD personnel were involved in the incident, the Mesa County Sheriff’s Office is conducting the investigation.

According to the Sheriff’s Office, the incident took place Friday at about 6:30 p.m. Callers reported a person with a knife inside the Dairy Queen at Seventh Street and North Avenue.

Officers with the Grand Junction Police Department confronted the suspect in the parking lot and shot her, according to the Sheriff’s Office, which is leading the investigation into the shooting.

”The suspect fled in the vehicle, crashing into another vehicle while exiting the business parking lot,” a MCSO press release stated. “The suspect vehicle eventually stopped after striking multiple vehicles west of the intersection at First Street and North Avenue.”

Two other people were hospitalized during the incident, according to the Sheriff’s Office, one with knife wounds and one with injuries from a car crash.

The Grand Junction Police Department is responsible for releasing the names of the officers.

”The investigation remains ongoing, and details can change as more information becomes available through the course of the investigation,” the Sheriff’s Office stated. “Additional details will be released as appropriate with sensitivity to the ongoing case.”

The CIRT team is comprised of representatives of the Grand Junction Police Department, Mesa County Sheriff’s Office, Fruita Police Department, Palisade Police Department, Colorado State Patrol, Colorado Department of Corrections, 21st Judicial District Attorney’s Office, and Colorado Bureau of Investigation.
