Election Day for the June primary election is over in New York City.

New Yorkers cast votes to pick their party’s candidates for Congress, state Assembly and state Senate. There was also a Democratic primary for New York state comptroller. 

In some of the highest-profile races, Brad Lander and Darializa Avila Chevalier defeated incumbents in congressional races; Claire Valdez will be the Democratic nominee to replace outgoing Rep. Nydia Velázquez; Micah Lasher will be the Democratic nominee to replace outgoing Rep. Jerrold Nadler; and incumbent Tom DiNapoli will again be the Democratic nominee for state comptroller.

Here’s a recap of what happened in some of the other local races on election night. 

Congressional races
NY-6 in Queens

Incumbent Rep. Grace Meng will be the Democratic nominee in the race for New York’s 6th Congressional District in Queens. 

According to The Associated Press, with more than 84% of the expected vote in, Meng had 56.8% of votes and former diplomat Chuck Park had 42.9%.

This district includes all or parts of neighborhoods like Elmhurst, Corona, Forest Hills, Flushing, Fresh Meadows and Oakland Gardens. 

Meng became the first Asian American elected to the House of Representatives from New York in 2012.

NY-14 in Queens and the Bronx

Incumbent Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez will be the Democratic nominee in the race for New York’s 14th Congressional District in Queens and the Bronx. 

According to The Associated Press, with more than 89% of the expected vote in, Ocasio-Cortez had 86.9% of votes, Felipe Garcia had 6.7% and Martin Dolan had 6.5%.

This district includes all or parts of the Queens neighborhoods of Astoria, Long Island City, Sunnyside, Woodside, Jackson Heights, Corona, North Corona, East Elmhurst and College Point, and the Bronx neighborhoods of Mott Haven, Port Morris, Hunts Point, Longwood, Soundview, Castle Hill, Clason Point, Parkchester, Van Nest, Pelham Bay, Pelham Gardens, City Island, Throggs Neck, Country Club and Westchester Square.

Ocasio-Cortez has been in office since 2019, when she became the youngest woman to be elected to Congress.

NY-15 in the Bronx

Incumbent Rep. Ritchie Torres will be the Democratic nominee in the race for New York’s 15th Congressional District in the Bronx. 

According to The Associated Press, with more than 89% of the expected vote in, Torres had 71.9% of votes and former Bronx state Assemblyman Michael Blake had 21.8%.

This district spans the North and South Bronx.

Torres has been in office since 2021.

Senate races
State Senate District 13 in Queens

Queens state Assemblywoman Jessica González-Rojas will be the Democratic nominee in the race for New York state Senate District 13 in Queens, defeating incumbent Sen. Jessica Ramos. 

According to The Associated Press, with more than 87% of the expected vote in, González-Rojas had 47.9% of votes, Ramos had 37.1% and former state Sen. Hiram Monserrate had 14.5%.

This district covers parts of Queens, including Jackson Heights, Corona and East Elmhurst.

Leading up to the primary election, González-Rojas had endorsements from Reps. Ocasio-Cortez and Nydia Velázquez, Queens Borough President Donovan Richards and the Working Families Party, which previously backed Ramos.

Ramos has been in office since 2019.

State Senate District 27 in Manhattan

State Assemblywoman Grace Lee will be the Democratic nominee in the race for New York state Senate District 27 in Manhattan. 

According to The Associated Press, with more than 84% of the expected vote in, Lee had 62.5% of votes and former lawmaker Yuh-Line Niou had 37.3%.

This district covers parts of Queens, including Jackson Heights, Corona and East Elmhurst.

Lee was the first Korean American woman elected to the state Legislature and has represented the 65th Assembly District in Manhattan since 2023.

She will likely replace retiring Sen. Brian Kavanagh, who has been in office since 2017.

Assembly races
State Assembly District 38 in Queens

David Orkin will be the Democratic nominee in the race for New York state Assembly District 38 in Queens, defeating incumbent state Assemblywoman Jenifer Rajkumar. 

According to The Associated Press, with more than 94% of the expected vote in, Orkin had 58.8% of votes and Rajkumar had 40.9%.

This district covers South and Central Queens, including Glendale, Ozone Park, Richmond Hill, Ridgewood, Woodhaven and parts of South Ozone Park and South Richmond Hill.

Orkin is a member of the Democratic Socialists of America and was endorsed by Mayor Zohran Mamdani.

Rajkumar has been in office since 2021.
