U.S. Rep. Joe Morelle will win the Democratic nomination in an effort to earn another term representing New York’s 25th Congressional District, the Associated Press declared, defeating two primary challengers.
The incumbent came out victorious over former Greece school board member Sherita Traywick and community organizer Robin Wilt in Tuesday’s primary elections.
As of the latest unofficial results, Morelle had 63.6% of the vote to Wilt’s 30.1% and Traywick’s 6.0%, with 95.3% of the estimated vote counted.
“I once again marvel at the support that I’m blessed to have in this community,” Morelle said. “I’m grateful to friends and neighbors who continue to give me this great opportunity to serve what I think is the finest community in all of the country.”
Morelle has been in Congress since 2018. He serves as a member of the House Committee on Appropriations and as ranking member of the Committee on House Administration.
He is running for a fifth term in the House of Representatives and will face Republican Monroe County Legislator Virginia McIntyre in the general election in November.
After winning, Morelle continued to highlight what he is pushing for on a federal level.
“Ending stock trading for members of Congress and the president of the United States should no longer be able to engage in that or in prediction markets. We need to make sure we have dramatic reforms in the United States Supreme Court. Not only a code of ethics that has binding and real teeth to it, but also a term limit for United States Supreme Court members.”
The 25th Congressional District encompasses all of Monroe County and parts of northwestern Ontario County, including Victor.
Election Day is Nov. 3.
