Although the number of HIV cases in the city has fallen sharply over the decades, recent data is causing concern.
The most recent city health data shows that New York reported 1,791 new HIV cases in 2024. That’s a 5.4% increase from the year prior.
Local health officials warn that this increase comes at a time when the federal government is threatening access to HIV testing, treatment, and prevention.
Doug Wirth, president and CEO of Amida Care, a city nonprofit specializing in HIV care and sexual health, joined NY1 anchor Shannan Ferry to discuss how New York can drive down the number of HIV cases.
