A $2 million contribution from New York state will help open a community-owned grocery under construction in Schenectady.
State Assembly Speaker Carl Heastie and Assemblyman Angelo Santabarbara announced the funding for the Electric City Community Grocery, a food cooperative which has signed a lease in the downtown Wedgeway Building and is scheduled to open late this year, according to its website.
The two toured the site on Thursday before announcing the funding, which Santabarbara said will help close a remaining funding gap for the project.
The community-owned store will offer popular consumed foods and local, natural products. It plans to accept SNAP and Double Up Food Bucks.
