TOPEKA, Kan. (WIBW) – Manhattan invites you to hit the water for a splash-tacular event to celebrate our nation’s independence.
Willie Thomas with Manhattan Parks and Rec Foundation visited Eye on NE Kansas with details about their Star-Spangled Spectacular.
The event is a cardboard boat regatta for young people. “Captains” ages 5 to 14 can enlist the help of one “crew member” (perhaps a parent or other adult) to build a cardboard boat. They’ll have one hour to complete the vessel. Then, the child will attempt to sail the board the length of City Park Pool.
In addition to the children’s competition, companies can involve adults in the corporate challenge. Companies can involve as many team members as they wish.
A single-person adult division in a new addition this year. Both the adult and corporate boats will be built in advance.
Proceeds benefit the Manhattan Parks and Rec Foundation. The money will go toward scholarship programs that allow youth and families to take part in programs they might not otherwise afford.
The Star Spangled Spectacular, benefiting the MHK Parks & Rec Foundation, runs 8 a.m. to Noon Saturday, July 4 at City Park Pool in Manhattan.
Registration is 8 to 9 a.m.; boat building runs 9 to 10 a.m.; and races begin at 10 a.m.
Entry fee is $35 for a youth team, $50 for the adult division and $250 for a corporate team. Learn more and register in advance at July4MHK.com. Registration also will be accepted on-site.
